Our statement on AI usage in writing
We build AI features for writers, so we owe you a plain statement of what we think AI is for.
We believe AI should remove the barriers that keep people from being creative, not do the creating for them. The blank page, the detail forgotten four chapters back, the continuity error you only catch on a re-read, the hours lost to formatting and reformatting: these are the obstacles between a writer and the story only they can tell. That is where we want AI to help.
The creativity is yours. The characters, the world, the voice, the choices that make a story worth reading come from you. Clifford’s AI tools are built to clear the path, not to walk it for you. We will not ship features whose purpose is to generate your story in your place.
Your words stay yours in another sense too. The text you import or scan is sent to our AI provider (Anthropic) only to do the job you asked for, and it is never used to train AI models.
If a feature ever blurs that line, tell us. This is a standard we intend to hold ourselves to.
