A character profile template that tracks the whole book

What is on the sheet

• Identity

  Name, role in the story, age, occupation, and affiliation, plus a status marker: alive, dead, missing, or unknown.

• First and last chapter

  Where the character enters the book and where they leave it, so a cast list doubles as a map of who is on the page when.

• What drives them

  Appearance, goal, fear, secret, and flaw. Five lines that decide how a character behaves when a scene puts pressure on them.

• Relationships

  Three slots for who they are connected to and how, which is usually where the conflict you have not written yet is hiding.

• Chapter log

  Nine rows: the chapter, what they appear in, what they do, and what changed. The last column is the one that matters.

• Arc notes

  Three lines for the shape of the change across the book, so a profile is a trajectory rather than a snapshot.

Why the chapter log is the useful part

Most character sheets describe a person and stop. That is fine until chapter 40, when the question is not "what is she like" but "when did she last appear, what did she know then, and what has changed since". A static profile cannot answer any of those.

Filling in the "what changed" column each time a character appears costs a few seconds and gives you the thing re-reads are usually for. A character with ten log rows and nothing in that column is a character who has been on the page without moving.

When four profiles are not enough

A four-profile PDF handles a small cast. Can I type into it, or do I have to print it?

Either. It is a fillable PDF, so every field can be typed into in any PDF reader, and it prints cleanly if you would rather write by hand.

How many characters does it hold?

Four, one per page. Download it again for the next four, or print the page you need as many times as you like.

Does it work for a series?

For a small cast, yes. The chapter log has nine rows, which covers a character with a focused role; a viewpoint character across five books will outgrow it.
